There are a number of national oral health improvement programmes in Scotland. Childsmile is the national programme designed to reduce oral health inequalities and helping to improve oral health among children.

There are also four adult programmes, focussing on those who may have difficulties in maintaining good oral health. These programmes are:

  • Caring for Smiles for dependent older people aged 65 years and over.
  • Mouth Matters for people with experience of the justice system.
  • Open Wide for adults with additional care needs, aged from 16-64 years.
  • Smile4life for people experiencing homelessness

These national programmes are delivered locally by oral health improvement staff based in Health Boards across Scotland. The programmes also work in partnership with Public Health Scotland which supports with development of resources and NHS Education for Scotland which support the educational and training aspects.
