Safety Climate Survey

Health care improvement logo

The SCS is a tool that allows teams to measure and better understand the current safety climate within their practice. The results from the SCS can be used to start a quality improvement planning conversation with your team and it has been used extensively in other primary care settings to help teams understand their practice and where they can make improvements.

Completing the survey will help your dental practice start a conversation about patient safety and identify where you can make improvements.

The SPSP Webex recording explains the whole process in detail

The Chief Dental Officer highlighted the survey in the recent memorandum to his letter PCA(D)(2019)10. Completing the survey and developing an action plan for improvement is part of the 2019–2020 quality improvement activity.

The Safety Climate Survey closes on Tuesday 31st March 2020. Download this leaflet as a PDF.

The survey focuses on five domains:

  • workload
  • communication
  • teamwork
  • safety systems and learning, and
  • leadership.

Who should take part?

To help your dental practice benefit from the survey, we recommend all staff are invited to take part including receptionist, nurses, dentists, hygienists or anyone else working in your dental practice. You will need to ask someone in your practice to co-ordinate this.

How do I take part?

The information on how to register your dental practice for the survey will come from your NHS board to your practice’s NHS.net email address. Please check the email inbox after Thursday 1 August 2019.

How do I find out more?

Five FAQs have been published about the SCS:

  1. Why should your team take part in the SCS?
  2. How do you register for the SCS?
  3. How to submit a single survey when staff work in different practices, or split your registration
  4. What will your SCS report look like?
  5. What to do after you get your report.
